Lionel Messi runs through entire defense to score for Barcelona vs. Real Madrid in El Clásico
(Sun, 23 Apr 2017 19:30:33 GMT)
There’s not anything particularly wrong with the way Real Madrid defends here. This made the game 1-1 just five minutes after Madrid’s opener, so it couldn’t have come at a more important time in the match.
Aaron Hernandez once seemingly threatened reporter Ian Rapoport with murder
(Sat, 22 Apr 2017 18:56:31 GMT)
The Aaron Hernandez story came to a tragic end earlier this week when the former star tight end of the New England Patriots was found hanging in his prison cell in what has since been ruled a suicide. Hernandez was serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole after he was convicted in the 2013 killing of semi-pro football player and friend Odin Llyod. More details have been coming to light in the wake of Hernandez’s death, revealing just how troubled Hernandez may have been, and how he possibly posed a threat to everyone around him, including reporters. Just ask NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, who was a Patriots beat writer back in 2010 when Hernandez was drafted by the Pats.
How David Freese opening up on battle with depression helps everyone
(Sat, 22 Apr 2017 02:06:05 GMT)
David Freese was on top of the world back in the fall of 2011. Or at least that’s how it appeared to those on the outside looking in. At the time he was playing a key role in the St. Louis Cardinals run to a World Series championship, even earning MVP honors for his heroic performance in the Fall Classic. What we didn’t know then, is that Freese was actually at or near the lowest point in his life. The now 33-year-old major leaguer revealed as much in a recent article from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, which chronicles Freese’s battles with depression, anxiety and alcohol abuse.
Giants claim evidence was omitted to make Eli Manning look guilty
(Sat, 22 Apr 2017 13:07:08 GMT)
The Giants consistently have said that the supposed smoking-gun email implicating quarterback Eli Manning in memorabilia fraud was taken out of context and does not show that he actually wanted to dupe purchasers of game-used helmets with helmets not actually used in a game. According to ESPN.com, lawyers representing the Giants and Manning have claimed in a court filing that the lawyers representing the plaintiffs in that case deliberately omitted “relevant evidence” to create the impression that Manning was complicit in a scheme to defraud. The claims were made in a formal request to ask the presiding judge to uphold an agreement that information regarded as confidential would not be disclosed publicly. The Giants’ lawyers also contend that the plaintiffs “cherry-picked” the email that seems to show Eli’s involvement, in order to make him look bad publicly.
Assault charge dropped in punch outside Trump campaign rally
(Sat, 22 Apr 2017 18:38:00 GMT)
Prosecutors have dropped a misdemeanor assault charge against a 73-year-old man who police say hit a woman outside of a Donald Trump campaign rally in North Carolina last September. Buncombe County District Attorney Todd Williams told the Citizen-Times of Asheville ( http://avlne.ws/2oTJK7k ) that the case was dismissed after prosecutors spoke to the victim, 69-year-old Shirley Teter. Teter initially told police she was punched in the face outside of the Trump rally. Williams wouldn't say why his office decided not to press the case. His office's court filing cites "prosecutorial discretion." A lawyer for Richard Campbell said the man had poor eyesight and was trying to brush off someone who

Boston Globe tries to smear Tom Brady and his charity contributions
(Sun, 23 Apr 2017 05:00:00 GMT)
Over the last few months, the media has become a target of criticism. The reasons for this are manifold – ranging from the rise of social media to a click-based economy under which outlets operate – but they have all led to the creation of the „fake news“-moniker to brand both reporting that is either factually untrue or too opinionated for one’s liking. Enter the largest newspaper in New England, the Boston Globe. It launched a campaign titled "Facts Matter" to emphasize how important and critical correct reporting has become in the present day and age. And to its credit, the facts presented in the recently published article titled "Tom Brady gives much to Best Buddies, but has taken millions
WATCH: Injured Kevin Durant loses his mind during Warriors' incredible scoring run
(Sun, 23 Apr 2017 09:59:00 GMT)
The Portland Trail Blazers must have been feeling pretty good. Their scoring duo of Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum was having a great game -- even outplaying Warriors stars Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. Most importantly for the Blazers, they had the lead, and a pretty big one at that. But then the Warriors showed us why they're the Warriors. Led by Curry, Thompson, Draymond Green and playoff darling JaVale McGee, the Warriors erased a 16-point deficit in four minutes during the third quarter, and eventually took the lead with a 19-1 run. It was a barrage of 3-pointers and dunks from the defending Western Conference champs. Noticeably absent was Kevin Durant, who missed his second straight
Police: Dismissed Michigan State player sexually assaulted woman while girlfriend waited in car
(Sat, 22 Apr 2017 15:11:46 GMT)
It made perfect sense why Mark Dantonio dismissed Auston Robertson from his Michigan State football team on Friday. Now it really makes sense. Friday, reports surfaced that Robertson was facing a charge of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, a felony, stemming from an April 9 incident. At the time, no details of what led to the charge were divulged; now, they have been. From mlive.com, detailing the testimony of Meridian Township (Mich.) police detective Rebecca Payne during a court hearing: … the alleged victim said she ran into Robertson at a party at around 11 p.m. on April 8 in East Lansing. After the victim accompanied Robertson and a friend to a local pizza place, Robertson’s girlfriend

Report: Packers’ coaches “incensed” Ted Thompson let T.J. Lang walk
(Sun, 23 Apr 2017 15:43:41 GMT)
When the Packers decided not to out-bid the Lions for veteran guard T.J. Lang last month, it was business as usual: The Packers don’t overspend in free agency, and when a soon-to-be 30-year-old guard with a hip injury hits free agency, that’s the type of player you’d expect to leave in Green Bay. Nonetheless, it apparently didn’t sit well with Green Bay’s coaching staff. According to Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Packers’ coaches were incensed that G.M. Ted Thompson let Lang get away in free agency. McGinn suggests that longtime Packers offensive line coach James Campen was working hard to keep Lang and was particularly upset when the Packers didn’t keep him. If that’s true,
Logan Morrison curses out umpire CB Bucknor mid at-bat
(Sun, 23 Apr 2017 08:00:00 GMT)
The hits just keep on coming for umpire CB Bucknor. Bucknor was working home plate during the Tampa Bay Rays-Houston Astros game on Saturday and got loudly cursed out by Rays first baseman Logan Morrison in the sixth inning for a questionable high strike call. In the video, which can be seen here, Morrison can be heard cursing after a pitch that was up and in was called for a strike to make it 0-2. Morrison then drops about three F-bombs, says "you got to be kidding me," and tells Bucknor "that's [bleeping] bad." Morrison was able to battle back and work a walk in the at-bat.
Ian Poulter lost his PGA Tour card, but he isn't giving up on pro golf
(Sat, 22 Apr 2017 21:38:05 GMT)
Ian Poulter lost his status on Friday at the Valero Texas Open. Ian Poulter formally lost his fully-exempt PGA Tour status on Friday when he missed the cut at the Valero Texas Open, leaving him short of fulfilling the requirements of a major medical extension on which his card hinged. The 41-year-old took time off last year from the Tour to rest an injured foot, and, upon his return, was given 10 starts by the PGA Tour to earn enough money to make up the gap between his 2015-16 earnings and what the player who finished 125th on last season’s money list made.
Tony Ferguson is a 'bad night' for Conor McGregor says Al Iaquinta
(Sun, 23 Apr 2017 10:45:37 GMT)
Tony Ferguson is the fighter who can give Conor McGregor the most problems according to fellow lightweight contender Al Iaquinta. Ferguson was supposed to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov for the interim lightweight title at UFC 209 in March, with the winner expected to challenge McGregor for his belt. "El Cucuy" had already set his sights on the Irishman, going on to repeatedly call him out on Twitter, but McGregor – who is currently chasing a big money fight with Floyd Mayweather – has not responded or even acknowledged Ferguson.

Iowa A.D. Gary Barta details damaged relationship with Meyer
(Sat, 22 Apr 2017 01:34:00 GMT)
University of Iowa athletic director Gary Barta testified Friday that his relationship with a former top administrator deteriorated after Barta informed her that after a reorganization of the athletic department, she no longer would be his second-in-command. Testifying in a discrimination lawsuit filed by that former administrator, Jane Meyer, Barta said the two initially had a strong working relationship but that she became antagonistic after he told her in 2013 that he'd look for a new deputy director. Barta said part of the basis for his decision was his belief the head football and wrestling coaches wouldn't support Meyer as the deputy. "Our working relationship that day changed forever,"
Reds hilariously troll Cubs fans with 'Bandwagon Cam'
(Sat, 22 Apr 2017 16:44:47 GMT)
After 108 years of frustration and disappointment that’s been passed down from generation to generation, Chicago Cubs fans finally got to celebrate a World Series championship last fall. It’s April now and it’s time to move on, which means Cubs fans are now fair game again for taunts and trolling. It’s just a different form of taunting and trolling now that the Cubs have actually won.
Prototypical Patriots: Garcia an athletic option at offensive tackle
(Sun, 23 Apr 2017 14:51:33 GMT)

Irish police send a cryptic tweet about McIlroy
(Sun, 23 Apr 2017 15:23:40 GMT)
It's been something of an open secret since the start of last week that Rory McIlroy was getting married to his girlfriend, Erica Stoll, this week. The wedding was slated to take place at the stunning Ashford Castle in Ireland, and while there was no official confirmation from Rory's camp, it was widely reported by multiple outlets. And, by all accounts, it went rather well! Golfweek summarizes the various reports, confirming the wedding took place on Wednesday: The expected performer, Stevie Wonder, is alleged to have indeed been the musical guest, with Sheeran also reportedly offering a special performance. (All of this according to E! news.) The Daily Mirror reports that guests went clay pigeon

Giants' Ben McAdoo on brutal schedule: 'We'll make the best of it'
(Sun, 23 Apr 2017 11:19:46 GMT)
The NFL officially announced the 2017 regular season schedule earlier this week, and to say the New York Giants got hosed would be an understatement. The Giants have, by far, the toughest schedule in the NFL. Four of their first six games are on the road, their first two in primetime, they play four teams coming off of their bye week, have split west coast games and play on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Oh yeah, based on the 2016 standings, they also face the eight-hardest strength of schedule in the league. Despite it all, Giants head coach Ben McAdoo says they will approach it one game at a time and make the best of a bad situation. “I know we have three of our first four

Serena, who announced her pregnancy just this past Wednesday via a baby bump pic on Snapchat, and Ohanian were photographed Friday lying beside each other in lounge chairs on the beach in the Mexican resort town of Playa del Carmen. The tennis star wore what appeared to be a lilac and blue tankini swimsuit and covered her baby bump with a white towel. She was seen smiling as she got cozy with her fiancé, who held what
Shawn Porter's body work, whirlwind attack result in ninth-round TKO of Andre Berto
(Sun, 23 Apr 2017 03:53:21 GMT)
Shawn Porter’s boxing style isn’t elegant, but it is oh-so effective. The muscular 29-year-old simply overwhelmed Andre Berto by sheer force of will, dropping the two-time former champion three times and stopping him at 1:31 of the ninth in their WBC welterweight title eliminator Saturday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Porter put on a devastating body attack, and Berto deserves an exceptional amount of credit for standing up to them and fighting back the way he did.

(Sat, 22 Apr 2017 00:30:22 GMT)
The Patriots may have their "big back" for 2017 and beyond by Monday if the Bills decide not to match the offer sheet Mike Gillislee received from New England. Maybe Bill Belichick and Nick Caserio feel as though Rex Burkhead can handle that role. Who knows? Maybe they end up bringing back LeGarrette Blount and use him as their between-the-tackles hammer. For every step the Oakland Athletics have taken toward identifying a new ballpark location in or around Oakland, it seems they’ve taken 10 steps back. Perhaps that’s about to change though, as the team revealed on Friday that it intends to announce a new ballpark site in Oakland before the end of 2017. A ballpark site in Oakland will be announced later this year.
UFC Plotting Big-Money PPV? Jon Jones, Cris Cyborg And Nick Diaz All Tied To Same Card
(Sat, 22 Apr 2017 22:13:00 GMT)
Could Jon Jones, Cris “Cyborg” Justino and Nick Diaz all appear on the same UFC pay-per-view card? It’s nowhere near a sure thing — particularly when it comes to the perennially inactive Diaz — but all three of these polarizing stars have been tied to the same summer pay-per-view card. As of now, only Jones has been officially targeted for UFC 214 in July, as reported by Ariel Helwani on Thursday. Per Helwani, the former pound-for-pound king will meet Daniel Cormier in their long-awaited rematch for the UFC light heavyweight championship, which has fallen through twice due to a Cormier injury and Jones doping ban. A grudge match with the drawing power of Jones vs. Cormier 2 (their first fight
Marshawn Lynch joining the Raiders is reportedly being held up by one big issue
(Sat, 22 Apr 2017 20:46:18 GMT)
It looks like we finally know what's holding up Marshawn Lynch's potential deal with the Raiders, and surprise, surprise, it's the thing that holds up most deals in the NFL: money. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Beast Mode and the Raiders haven't agreed to terms on a contract because they can't agree on how much Lynch should be paid in 2017. Once Lynch officially comes out of retirement, he'll be scheduled to make $9 million in base salary for the upcoming season. Apparently, Beast Mode doesn't expect to make that full amount, but he does expect the Raiders to pay him at least half of that ($4.5 million). The problem for Lynch is that the Raiders don't want to pay him a dime more
JaCoby Jones hit in face by pitch, leaves Detroit Tigers game
(Sat, 22 Apr 2017 19:48:50 GMT)
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Add JaCoby Jones to the latest list of injured Detroit Tigers. Jones was hit in the face by an 89 m.p.h. fastball from right-handed pitcher Justin Haley in the top of the third inning. Jones immediately ran down the line before stopping and was quickly met by head athletic trainer Kevin Rand. Jones seemed to be bleeding from his mouth, and walked off the field with assistance. Andrew Romine entered as a pinch runner and remained in the game as the centerfielder. The Tigers lost Miguel Cabrera to the 10-day disabled list Saturday afternoon due to a right groin strain. John Hicks was called up from Triple-A Toledo. The Tigers were already without shortstop Jose Iglesias (who is

(Sun, 23 Apr 2017 18:44:06 GMT)
It has not been an easy week for San Francisco Giants fans. Not only did their beloved team drop its last two games in Colorado by a combined score of 18-8, but they’ve had to adjust to the reality of their best player, Madison Bumgarner, being out for six-to-eight weeks after a dirt bike accident on his day off. “What Madison Bumgarner does on his day off is anyone’s guess,” the narrator says as the spot begins.

Morning Update: Bulls prep for Game 4; Cubs won; Sox lost
(Sun, 23 Apr 2017 03:45:06 GMT)
Rajon Rondo’s shrieking, distinctive voice could be heard through the Advocate Center before the Bulls practiced Saturday afternoon but because his distinctive game won’t be available, Fred Hoiberg is faced with his first big playoff test as coach. The Bulls still go into Sunday evening’s Game 4 with an opportunity to put the Celtics in a precarious position but you’d be hard-pressed to find many who believe the Bulls actually have the advantage in this series. It's easy to forget the Bulls have a 2-1 lead, but it looked like they forgot it themselves in their 104-87 Game 3 loss Friday night. “I feel we have a really good team,” Jimmy Butler said before practice. “I’m taking our chances over
UW’s Chris Petersen on Jake Browning, Greg Gaines, Brayden Lenius, NFL draft … and new uniforms?
(Sat, 22 Apr 2017 21:08:41 GMT)
Here’s everything Washington coach Chris Petersen had to say Saturday afternoon following the Huskies’ spring preview at Husky Stadium: (Brayden Lenius now compared to a year ago … ) “I think he’s making good progress. I think he’s one of those guys where spring’s been good, was healthy for the spring. Last spring he was not. And he was going through a rough patch. I think he made some progress this spring, which is good to see. Guy has some really good ability. But we’re not ready to play a game. I don’t think many are right now. That’s the one thing that’s really apparent. But I think we made some good strides. The thing is, we truly go back to square one. It’s been a long time since we played

(Sat, 22 Apr 2017 18:52:36 GMT)
Eden Hazard’s 75th-minute strike won it for the Blues, who earned a return trip to Wembley for the May 27 final against the winner of Sunday’s semifinal between Arsenal and Manchester City. The highlight of the game came from Nemanja Matic, the Chelsea defensive midfielder who had not scored all season until he hammered home the clinching goal in the 80th minute. You cannot strike a ball any better than Nemanja Matic just did.

Mark Richt talks David Njoku, Brad Kaaya, more
(Sun, 23 Apr 2017 18:22:30 GMT)
As the draft approaches, we’ve talked to more than a few NCAA coaches. Friday’s PFT Live include a visit from Miami coach Mark Richt, who has a couple of intriguing prospects in the 2017 draft. I asked specifically about tight end David Njoku and quarterback Brad Kaaya. “The big thing for him is he does have a rare athleticism at that tight end position,” Richt said of Njoku. “The length, the speed, and the quickness. Sometimes when guys are longer and they weigh 245, 250 [pounds] they don’t have the quicks. But he’s got great quick twitch. He’s got great body control. He can catch a ball in kind of any position you can ask for. He’s a much tougher online blocker than people want to give him

(Sun, 23 Apr 2017 15:30:12 GMT)
Murphy spoiled you guys, Dusty Baker told reporters before Daniel Murphy broke out of a mini-slump with a two-hit game on Saturday in New York. Daniel Murphy finished the 2016 campaign, his first with Washington after signing a 3-year/$37.5M free agent deal with the Nationals in January of 2016, 31 for 75 (.413/.444/.773) with six doubles and seven home runs in 19 games against the New York Mets, who drafted the now-32-year-old infielder in the 13th Round of the 2006 Draft and developed him over seven major league seasons. Murphy left via free agency after declining a qualifying offer from New York.

Hank Haney: Tiger not 'enthralled' by idea of mounting comeback
(Fri, 21 Apr 2017 22:10:17 GMT)
One of the most enduring questions in modern golf has been whether or not a player will break Jack Nicklaus's record of 18 major championships. Until 2009, Tiger Woods seemed on track to reach 18 with ease, but his personal and physical struggles in the ensuing years have left him stalled on No. 14. Golf fans has been eagerly anticipating Tiger's return to competitive play ever since he withdrew from the Dubai Desert Classic in February, citing back spasms.
