Atlanta Thrashers Information:
The Thrashers play at Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, and wear uniforms of blue, copper, red, and gold. The team's name is taken from the brown thrasher, the state bird of Georgia.

On June 25, 1997, the NHL officially awarded expansion team franchises to Atlanta; Saint Paul, Minnesota; Columbus, Ohio; and Nashville, Tennessee. The company that owns the Thrashers, Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., also owns the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Atlanta Braves of major league baseball.

Atlanta welcomed the return of the NHL in 1999 with the arrival of the Thrashers. Previously home to the Flames, Atlanta had been without an NHL team for nearly 20 years when the Flames were sold to a group of Calgary businessmen -- it's also odd that the name of the team remained the Flames because it was named after the famous fire of Atlanta started by General William Tecumseh Sherman in 1864 destroying the key southern city of Atlanta, which was considered the beginning of the end of the Civil War.

Stan Kasten, who is also president of the Hawks and the Braves, is president of the Thrashers. Before the start of their inaugural 1999-2000 season, the Thrashers filled their roster with players selected in a series of drafts. Although in two different conferences, there is something revengefully sweet about the match ups between the Thrashers and the Flames.
