The big broom that Brian Burke was expected to wield as the Leafs' new president and general manager will be put away until after Christmas.
Burke officially took power with a tough-sounding agenda on making the Leafs accountable—"We require proper levels of pugnacity, testosterone, truculence and belligerence," he said at Saturday's introductory press conference—but he said he'll likely hold off on major changes for now.
"I don't think players should get traded at Christmas unless they ask to get traded," Burke said. "So for me to evaluate this team, make some judgments and do something before Dec. 9 is probably going to be hard to do. Anyone who's waiting with baited breath for that first deal might wait past that deadline."

Toronto's Blake sidelined by suspected concussion

Toronto left wing Jason Blake will miss the Maple Leafs' game Thursday night in Ottawa because of a suspected concussion. Blake was hit high by Atlanta's Colby Armstrong on Tuesday night and also hit the ice hard on his helmet. Coach Ron Wilson said after the game that Blake likely sustained a concussion.

The Blues traded forward Lee Stempniak to the Toronto Maple leafs for center Alexander Steen and defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo. The Blues made the deal Monday because they have needed a center since Andy McDonald broke his left leg on Nov. 16. Steen has two goals and two assists in 20 games this season, and has 50 goals and 76 assists in 253 career games.
