The Islanders have suffered losses in regulation in only seven of their first 22 games.
If elementary school math serves us correctly, that means that in more than two-thirds of its games, the team with the fewest points in the NHL last season has been ahead or even through 60 minutes of hockey.
Yes, the Islanders' 8-7-7 record entering Saturday's game in St. Louis is a marked improvement—and it has them firmly in the playoff hunt in the Eastern Conference just past the season's quarter turn.
It also means that the Isles have dropped an NHL-high seven games in overtimes (2-3) and shootouts (1-4), not that coach Scott Gordon is particularly lamenting his team's lack of success in tiebreaker situations.
