Chargers general manager A. J. Smith has taken his share of grief on quarterbacks he has passed on: Ben Roethlisberger (two Super Bowl rings), Eli Manning (one) and Drew Brees (one).
But Smith deserves credit for what he was able to wrangle from the Seattle Seahawks for No. 3 quarterback Charlie Whitehurst.
Whitehurst was a restricted free agent who was tendered a third-round pick. Seattle was interested, but minus a third-round pick this year the teams had to creative.
And it appears that worked in the Chargers' favor.
For letting Whitehurst go, the Chargers moved up 20 spots in this year's second round when flipping spots with the Seahawks, then collects Seattle's third-round selection for next year.

The Seattle Seahawks, attempting to bolster their quarterback position, traded Thursday for the San Diego Chargers' Charlie Whitehurst, who has yet to throw a pass in the NFL. Seattle swapped its second-round pick in next month's draft, allowing the Chargers to move up 20 spots to No. 40 overall, to take San Diego's 60th choice.

San Diego Chargers chief operating officer Jim Steeg says he is leaving the team at the end of the month. Steeg says in a statement that he's leaving to pursue "further challenges." The Chargers have agreed to terms on a two-year contract with free agent cornerback Donald Strickland. Strickland started two of the 11 games in which he played for the New York Jets last season, but was plagued by injuries. He dealt with a lingering quadriceps injury, a concussion and a broken pinkie during the season, and suffered a groin injury in the AFC championship game at Indianapolis.

The Chargers have claimed running back Marcus Mason off waivers from the Washington Redskins, beginning the process of restocking their backfield. Mason spent most of his first two NFL seasons on the practice squads of the Redskins and Baltimore Ravens. He played in nine games last season for the Redskins, gaining 127 yards on 32 carries.

The San Diego Chargers have agreed to terms with tight end Kris Wilson and defensive end Alfonso Boone. Both received two-year contracts. Wilson just completed his second season with the Chargers, catching four passes for 28 yards, with one touchdown. Boone joined the Chargers last year and started four of 13 games played.
