Churchill Downs was the idea of a Colonel M. Lewis Clark from Louisville, who wanted to construct a Louisville Jockey Club where race meets could be conducted and where the Kentucky breeding
industry could be showcased. The name comes from Clark's uncles, John and Henry Churchill, from whom Clark leased the land on which the Downs now stand. Churchill Downs officially opened May
17, 1875.
