PGA Championship Information:
When the Professional Golfers' Association of America first met in 1916, the legendary Walter Hagen and 34 other golf professionals laid the foundation for what would one day become the largest working sports
organization in the world. It was here that they also conceived the idea for a national championship. Hosting the meeting was department store tycoon Rodman Wanamaker, who decided to provide the trophy and
the initial purse of $2,580 for the match-play event.
The first PGA Championship was played that same year with Englishman Jim Barnes emerging as the winner. After the tournament took a two-year hiatus because of World War I, Barnes returned to win his second
consecutive title and begin his domination of the 1920's. After that, Walter Hagen began his record-tying five PGA Championship run, and Denny Shute became the first back-to-back winner in 1936 and 1937
before Tiger Woods in 2000. Then in 1958, the PGA changed the format of the tournament from match play to stroke play, thus ushering in a new crop of golf legends such as Bob Rosburg, Jay Hebert,
Jack Nicklaus, and of course, Tiger Woods.
Over the past 90 years, the PGA Championship has established itself as one of the premier sporting events on the globe. Every year over 100,000 spectators line the fairways during PGA Championship week
hoping to catch a memorable moment from the strongest, all-professional group of players in major championship golf.
This year the 87th PGA Championship will be played on the greens of Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey. Home to two championship 18-hole courses, both the Upper and Lower Courses have been chosen as
one of "America's Best 100 Classical Courses" by "GOLFWEEK" magazine. The Lower Course hosts generous fairways and rolling greens, as well as a pond and magnificent view of the clubhouse. Built on the side
of a mountain, the Upper Course has greens that can be difficult to read, as well as hilly terrain and narrow tree-lined fairways. The course has also been certified by Audubon International as a "Certified
Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary". A truly beautiful course, Baltusrol Golf Club is the perfect place to host the 87th PGA Championship.
