Alicia Keys was born Alicia Augello Cook, raised in Harlem, New York. At the age of five Alicia's parents noticed her musical gift. Her mother quickly signed her up for classical piano lessons. Alicia loved playing piano. She began song writing at the age of 14. Alicia attended the Performance Arts School of Manhattan. While majoring in choir she developed her vocal range.

Alicia had excellent grades in high school and was able to graduate when she was 16 years old. She jumped directly from high school to Columbia University but later left to concentrate on her love of music.

Alicia continued to write songs, slowly word began to get around in the industry about "this young girl named Alicia." Alicia was approached by record labels and signed with Clive Davis and Arista Records in 1998. When Clive Davis left the company and started J. Records, Alicia Keys followed. At only 19 years old she released her first CD, Songs In A Minor. The album she wrote and produced debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 Album Chart. The first single, "Fallin" was a huge hit, and turned Alicia Keys into a household name.

In later years, she appeared on movie soundtracks, securing exposure on BET and MTV, as well as on The Oprah Winfrey Show. This native New Yorker has what it takes to go the distance and become a music legend.
